What is Black Humboldt ?

Black Humboldt is interested in networking, building relationships and community with the black population residing and visiting Humboldt  County, CA. A DreamMaker project of The Ink People.

As the 2% Black population and 28% People of Color (PoC) is growing through employment, education and even vacation, our goal is to represent and support one another by focusing on positive stories from the community, investing in black business, arts and culture and building community awareness of  issues affecting Humboldt County residents.

Black Humboldt gives honor to the stewardship of this land and The Native American Tribes that make up Humboldt County including The Hoopa Tribe and The Wiyot Tribe whose land we gather on.

Black Humboldt's events and programming have a performing art aspect because the arts have a long history within Black and afro culture for being a vehicle for social change, expression and healing. Live music, singing, poetry, dance and so much more, is written in our DNA and is something shared across all the many races, ethnicities and languages of Blackness, it is crucial to our foundation as an organization. Through the performing arts Black Humboldt is creating safe spaces for Artists to bare themselves but also cultural awareness, preservation and representation.

People of Color (PoC): Historically oppressed and marginalized people as a direct result of American Colonialism.

Black Humboldt represents and supports the POC population by focusing on positive stories already present in the community, investing in Black/POC businesses, providing resources and educational opportunities, displaying and bringing arts and culture and building community awareness of the racial issues affecting Humboldt County residents. A few ongoing methods of achieving these goals have been through community partnerships, POC mixers, culturally significant space and teachings, gathering POC community members in safe spaces, educating non POC populations and providing support and resources to the POC population and POC business owners.
