What is your favorite art medium to work in, and why?
Music - instruments and singing. It is important to me, because music is my healer, for me and those who hear me... hopefully. I know my art form helps me. Perhaps my musical expression can not only help people feel good or better about themselves... Maybe It can also inspire folks to see a different way about current events, history, injustice, various realities...
When did you first figure out that art was important to you?
My dad taught me how to play guitar when i was a younger - teenager. It was shortly after learning some chords and being able to play some songs that I enjoyed, I understood the power of being able express one's self, even if only to yourself alone in your room. If I could describe a memory, I remember feeling something like, "Wow, this is fun, and I feel ok now. I feel good." Creating music is still new and exciting to me. I hope this never changes.
Who is your art mentor?
Through vinyl, cassette, CD, stereos and headphones: Joni Mitchell I've enjoyed playing and singing her songs over the years. She's been an inspiration to me musically even before I started playing my main instrument., the guitar. In my blessed, personal life: my mom and dad have passed their gifts of music on to me and have influenced me greatly. One more person I would like to mention that I look up to and have had the immense pleasure of playing music with over the years is, Bob Ebenstein. He has definitely paid his dues, and is a brilliant and diverse musician. I hope to be like the well - rounded, amazing musician that he is!
Finish this sentence: My art is my...
My art is my outlet. Not only to self - heal but also to take action. My art is central to my activism. I perform free, amplified music for people on the street, and all who want to listen, every Sunday, weather permitting, at Clarke Plaza in Eureka, CA from 1:15 - 3pm. I also play for benefit shows, various local venues, street concerts, and political demonstrations locally and throughout the state.
What advice would you offer someone just beginning their exploration of their own artistic self?
We are our hardest judge/ critic. So don't be too hard on yourself. Let it flow. Let whatever is inside come out.
