Holiday Gift Fair 2009 registration has begun!

Booth fees are $25 for each member and $55 for each non-member. Ink People members have priority registration until August 1st, first come first serve. Questions? Email Denise Dodd at djdld2@gmail.com or call Tanya at The Ink People 442-8413. Applications are available at The Ink People and will be mailed out or emailed upon request.

We are getting excited here at the Ink People because we are already brainstorming ideas to make this year’s Holiday Gift Fair the best ever! It takes a dedicated, enthusiastic team to put on events like this and we consider you our partners in making the 2009 Holiday Gift Fair the success we know it can be. With the current economic challenges, it is times like these that people are looking for homemade art and crafts that they know they can feel good about purchasing. One of our DreamMaker programs, The Coffee Opp, will be manning the concessions booth and will be providing many tasty, comforting, holiday treats to encourage extended shopping and celebration of the holiday season.

Curator and Open Heart Show founder Megan Workman is confident that the second round in 2009 will beautifully continue the art-dialogue that was initiated last year. Gallery visitors will have the opportunity to experience the art of Inkers as well as other Humboldt community members. Mixed media work, film installation, painting of varied mediums, and rotatable drawings are all represented in the Open Heart Show including as contributing artists Kelley Barrett, Stephen Clark, Denise Dodd, Margaret Draper, Korinna Irwin, Jen Prather, Carol Pryor, Michel Sargeant, Erin Slattery, Francine Sobol, and more.
Upon entering the space, you will be reminded of the delicacies that enable life to perpetuate. With a subtle bombardment of wild yams and wild carrots dangling overhead, accompanied by maggots consuming rotting roses, you have only just begun to experience the true esotericism of the Vagitarian.

Through installations of textile forms and vinyl transfers, the gallery visitor’s consciousness will be filled with the tampered biology of life forms emerging from their Wintry caves and the inhabitants of the artists’ sur-realities.

The show will open with a reception for the artists 6-9pm during Arts Alive on May 2 at The Ink People (411 Twelfth St. in Eureka, CA) For more information call 442.8413 or visit www.inkpeople.org

I am writing you today to invite you to participate in the 2nd Annual Open Heart Show at The Ink People Center for the Arts in June, 2009. I very much enjoyed being a part of KEET-TV’s “Campaign for Love &Forgiveness” by organizing and creating for the first show. The moment I heard that an organization was willing to grant projects that promoted these virtues, I knew I had to take part. If only more organizations of power, financial stability and/or influence, could
recognize and support such a beautiful and rewarding quest as love and forgiveness . . .

I named the show “Open Heart” in consideration of the most open heart-centers’ tendency to catalyze a greater capacity to love & therefore forgive. Community members responded with excitement & enthusiasm to participate. The show was an intriguing amalgamation of styles, influences, mediums, and perspectives. During opening night we featured the performance-based entries, which included a local film, a talk show about spreading love in the community, a spoken- word presentation of original poetry, and a playback theatre group who moved the audience to tears, laughter, & introspection. The Ink People’s Executive Director, Libby Maynard, said that the show’s opening was so powerful that it seemed we might just levitate the roof off the building.

We also created the first Open Heart ‘Zine in association with The Raven Project, a program of Humboldt’s Youth Services Bureau. It seems to have already inspired many. One young woman suggested we display all the pages that were completed at the time of the show, so I hung them clothesline style in the gallery. The pages generated much interest in the gallery and continue to inspire reflection as they are dispersed throughout Humboldt County.

The project also inspired me to lead my students in a curriculum I developed called “Lookin’ at Love”. I was an Americorps Youthserve member serving last year at Eel River Community School in Fortuna, CA. Most of my 7th – 12th graders come from tightly closed worlds ruled by hate. We looked at texts from writers around the world to help us examine our own concept and experience of love. I emphasized how even something that each of us may feel is basic, such as love, can be perceived completely differently by different people. We ended the lessons by listening to songs about love by musicians suggested by the students.

I look forward to all that we will bring to the show this year. One new dynamic we are adding to the show is the incorporation of a deck of Love&Forgiveness Cards created by Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat of loveandforgive.org to spur dialogue and thought around the theme. An example of a card is as follows: “Forgiveness is born of increased awareness. The more you can see, the easier it is to forgive.” — Deepak Chopra in The Path to Love

To Discuss: When has a conflict situation turned out to be much more complicated than you first thought it was?

To Do: Spend a few minutes in silent meditation. Follow the thoughts of your mind. Direct your thoughts to something that you need to forgive in yourself or in others. Continue to sit with this situation until you gain new clarity about it.

Artists are already collaborating to use these cards as a catalyst to the Open Heart 2009 ‘zine. We are inviting other artists of any medium to also choose one or more cards to use as their inspiration for creating new art for the show.

If you would like to participate in the show as an artist or a sponsor or would like access to the Love&Forgiveness cards, please contact me. I would be happy to discuss the possibilities of collaboration or give you more information.

Blessings for our next rotation around the sun,
